Auto-GPT was one of the first open-source autonomous agent frameworks, capable of breaking down goals into sub-tasks, browsing the web, writing files, and executing code using GPT-4 — all without step-by-step user guidance. Though the original concept has been superseded by more mature frameworks, Auto-GPT remains a landmark project in AI agent development with a large GitHub following. The project now includes Auto-GPT Forge and Auto-GPT Benchmark for advanced users.
